The most common material we use for our couplers is platinum cured silicone rubber that has excellent knotty tear resistance, excellent heat resistance, excellent ozone resistance and elongation. This material works great for most applications as the material holds up very well in the toughest of conditions and does not degrade like many other types of rubber does that are used for couplers. Most other types of rubbers used in couplers (thermoplastic elastomers, polyurethane, EPDM) have very poor tear resistance when there is a nick in the rubber.
